10.02.2010 - WHO

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced a new case of human H5N1 avian influenza infection. The case is a 37-year-old male from Helwan District, Helwan Governorate. He developed symptoms on 31 January and was hospitalized on 6 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a critical condition. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Of the 97 laboratory confirmed cases of Avian influenza A(H5N1) reported in Egypt, 27 have been fatal.

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced two new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection. The first case is a 32 year-old male from Ashmon district in Menofya Governorate. He developed symptoms on 6 February and was hospitalized on 8 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a stable condition. The second case is a 29 year-old pregnant female from Elsadat District, Menofya Governorate. She developed symptoms on 6 February and was hospitalized on 12 February, where she received oseltamivir treatment. She died on 13 February. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that both cases had exposure to sick and dead poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Egyptian authorities have also reported that 2 deaths have occurred in the previously announced cases; the 37 year-old male from Helwan District, Helwan Governorate who developed symptoms on 31 January and the 29 year-old female from Elsadat District, Menofya Governorate who developed symptoms on 27 January .

Of the 99 laboratory confirmed cases of Avian influenza A(H5N1) reported in Egypt, 30 have been fatal.

Health Ministry: 2 new bird flu cases confirmed

A statement released by the Ministry of Health on Friday 19 Feb 2010
confirmed 2 new bird flu [avian influenza H5N1 virus infection] cases
in Egypt, bringing the total number to 102.

The 101st case is a 13-year-old boy from Kafr El-Sheikh governorate.

The 102nd case is a 30-year-old woman from Qellin city, Kafr El-Sheikh
governorate.

[So far the identity and place of residence of the 100th case has not
been announced. According to the Flu Trackers web-site the 100th case
may have occurred in the Dakahlia governorate, but the details are
unknown (see:
<http://afludiary.blogspot.com/2010/02/e ... 1-102.html>). The number of human cases of avian influenza H5N1 in Egypt is running at more than twice the rate observed at this time in the previous year, and unlike the winter of 2009, many of this year's cases involve
adults.

The missing 100th case: Dakahlia Governorate
--------------------------------------------
A boy, age 10 years, began to exhibit symptoms on 10 Feb 2010. He was
referred to EL Bakry Hospital-Cairo in moderate condition. Tamiflu
(oseltamivir) treatment was started on 14 Feb 2010. Infection with HPAI
[highly pathogenic avian influenza -- that is, avian influenza (H5N1) virus
infection] was confirmed on 17 Feb 2010. The Ministry of Health (MOH)
reported this was case number 100 of highly pathogenic avian influenza in

[Previously the Egyptian Ministry of Health had omitted to identify the
100th case. This report rectifies that omission.

Some confusion remains, however. The SAIDR report above (text not shown)
identifies the 30 year old woman in Kafr El Sheikh governorate as the 101st
case, and a 13 year old boy in the same governorate as the 102nd case,
whereas the previous Ministry of Health report (see: Avian influenza, human
(15): Egypt, 101st & 102nd cases 20100220.0584) identifies the boy as the
101st case and the woman as the 102nd case. None of these cases has been fatal.

Egypt reported one new bird flu [avian influenza (H5N1) virus] infection on
Wed 24 Feb 2010, taking the tally to 103. A Health Ministry statement said
a 14 month old child from Qalyubia governorate was tested [avian influenza
H5N1 virus] positive.

The boy [was] administered the antiviral drug Tamiflu [oseltamivir], and he
is in stable health condition, according to the statement.

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced five new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection.

The first case is a 53 year-old male from Shobra Elkhima district, Qaliobia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 27 February and was hospitalized on 27 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a critical condition. The second case is a 1 year-old male from Banha district, Qaliobia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 22 February and was hospitalized on 23 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a stable condition. The third case is a 10 year-old male from Meet Ghamr district, Dakalia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 10 February and was hospitalized on 14 February, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a moderate condition. The fourth case is a 30 year-old female from Kellin District, Kafr El-Sheik Governorate. She developed symptoms on 10 February and was hospitalized on 11 February, where she received oseltamivir treatment. She is in stable condition. The fifth case is a 13 year-old male from Kafr El-Sheik District, Kafr El-Sheik Governorate. He developed symptoms on 10 February and was hospitalized on 14 February where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in stable condition.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the five cases had exposure to sick and dead poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Of the 104 laboratory confirmed cases of Avian influenza A(H5N1) reported in Egypt, 30 have been fatal.

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced two new cases of human H5N1 avian influenza infection.

The first case is a 20 year-old pregnant female from El Khanka district, Qaliobia Governorate. She was hospitalized on 5 March where she received oseltamivir treatment and died on 9 March. The second case is a 1 and a half year-old male from Elhamool district, Kfr Elsheikh Governorate. He was hospitalized on 2 March, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He is in a stable condition.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the two cases had exposure to sick and dead poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN). Egyptian authorities have also reported the death of a previously announced case; the 53 year-old male from Shobra Elkhima district, Qaliobia Governorate who developed symptoms on 27 February.

Egyptian Ministry announces 107th human case of avian influenza
(H5N1) virus infection

The Egyptian Ministry of Health on Sunday evening [21 Mar 2010],
[announced] the discovery of a human case of bird flu [avian
influenza (H5N1) virus infection]. The case is a child, aged 4 years,
resident in Beni Suef [governorate], bringing the number of [people]
infected with the disease since it appeared [in Egypt in 2006] to 107.

The Ministry's statement [indicated that the child had been admitted
to] Beni Suef General Hospital on 18 Mar 2010 suffering from high
fever, cough, runny nose and pneumonia after exposure to infected
birds. The child [received Tamiflu treatment and was transferred] to
a hospital in the capital in view of the patient's poor condition.

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced two new human cases of A(H5N1) avian influenza infection.

The first case was announced on 28 March and is a 30 year-old female from Damietta district, Damietta Governorate. The case was admitted to hospital on 24 March where she received oseltamivir treatment. She is in a critical condition. The second case was announced on 21 March and is a 4 year-old male from Beba district, Beni Suaif Governorate . The case was admitted to hospital on 18 March where he received oseltamivir treatment. He died on 24 March.

Investigations into the source of infection indicated that both cases had exposure to sick and dead poultry. The cases were confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Of the 108 laboratory confirmed cases of Avian influenza A(H5N1) reported in Egypt, 33 have been fatal.

The Health Ministry confirmed on Sun 4 Apr 2010 a new bird flu [avian
influenza (H5N1)] case in Egypt bringing the total number to 109
since the appearance [of the disease] in Egypt in 2006 till now.

The Ministry identified the case as an 18-year-old woman from
Al-Fayyoum Governorate. The Ministry reported that she suffers from
high temperature and difficulty in breathing and she has been treated
in Al-Fayyoum Fever Hospital since Wed 31 Mar 2010.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health announced on Sunday [4 Apr 2010] a
new human death from bird flu [avian influenza (H5N1) virus
infection]. The victim is a young woman of 18 years of age, from
[Al-Fayyoum Governorate].

According to the Ministry statement, the number of cases of the
disease in Egypt has risen to 109 cases, and the number of deaths to
34 [since the onset of the disease in 2006]. The statement indicated
that this is the 7th [fatal] case in 2010.

She was admitted to hospital on 31 March where she received oseltamivir treatment. She died on 4 April. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to sick and dead poultry. Egypt announced Thursday [26 Aug 2010] its 36th death linked to the
H5N1 virus, commonly referred to as avian or bird flu [avian
influenza A(H5N1) virus]. The 33-year-old victim, a woman from
Qalyubiya [governorate], was hospitalized in Cairo Wednesday [25 Aug
2010] after experiencing a high fever and difficulty breathing. The
Ministry of Health suspects she contracted the virus through contact
with infected poultry.

The World Health Organization says Egypt ranks 3rd globally in H5N1
documented cases. The majority of the cases in Egypt have come as the
result of close contact with infected domestic poultry. Approximately
5 million Egyptian families depend on poultry as an important source
of food and income.

[If confirmed by the WHO, this case will rank as the 112th human case
of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection in Egypt since the
inception of the outbreak in Egypt in 2006, and the 36th fatality.
There have been some erroneous figures in this and another report
from this source (which have been edited out), and confirmation from
WHO is awaited.

Globally, there have now been 503 human cases of avian influenza
(H5N1) virus infection and 299 fatalities since the 1st human cases
appeared in 2003.

The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).
