The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced a new case of human infection of H5N1 avian influenza. A 30-year-old female from Gharbia Governorate, developed symptoms on 28 November, was hospitalized on 1st of December, where she received oseltamivir treatment, and died on 2nd of December. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to sick and dead poultry. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Of the 113 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 37 have been fatal.

A 40-year-old woman from North Sinai Governorate died Wednesday night
[15 Dec 2010] from the H1N1 virus [influenza A/(H1N1) 2009 virus],
commonly known as swine flu, at Ismailia General Hospital, medical
sources confirmed. She was reportedly transferred to the hospital
following a severe lung infection.

The hospital sent her blood samples to the Ministry of Health, which
confirmed the H1N1 infection. She died only hours after being moved to
the quarantine ward.

There is another confirmed case of H1N1 in the hospital, a 35-year-old
woman who is currently receiving treatment, the same source added.

[This death of the woman in the North Sinai governorate of Egypt as a
result of influenza A/(H1N1) 2009 virus infection and another
confirmed case, which follow reports of cases in Israel and Yemen,
confirm that the winter influenza epidemic is now underway in the
Middle East as well as in parts of Europe. In contrast, cases of avian
A/(H5N1) influenza virus infection in Egypt have occurred sporadically
throughout the year and are believed to have been contracted from
diseased domestic poultry with no spread from person to person. The
most recent human avian influenza case occurred in Gharbia governorate

Ministry of Health spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin announced the
discovery of the latest case of bird flu [avian influenza A/(H5N1)
virus infection], afflicting a 25-year-old woman in Beheira
governorate. The unnamed woman constitutes the 114th case of bird flu
since the onset of the disease in Egypt.

Shaheen noted that the woman entered a local hospital with a high
fever and flu symptoms after being exposed to household birds
suspected of carrying the disease.

The spokesperson further added that "medical examinations found her
suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis." She is currently stable after
being administered a dose of the drug Tamiflu.

[A suspected 114th case was reported in ProMED-mail post: "Avian

This case was a 30-year-old man, a resident of Dakahlia governorate,
who died on 6 Dec 2010. There has been no subsequent confirmation of
this case, and, therefore, the 25-year-old woman in Beheira
governorate becomes the confirmed 114th case.

115th human case of avian influenza

[According to local sources] the Egyptian Ministry of Health has
announced the discovery of the 115th case of bird flu [avian
influenza A/(H5N1) virus infection] in Egypt.

Dr. Abdel Rahman Shaheen, official spokesman of the Ministry of
Health, reported the discovery of a new human case of bird flu. The
case is an 11-year-old child resident in Luxor governorate. He added
that this case is the 115th in Egypt since the outbreak of the
disease in Egypt [in 2006].

Dr. Shaheen said the girl had entered a hospital in Luxor governorate
suffering from high fever, cough, difficulty in breathing and
pneumonia. She had been exposed to birds suspected to have been
infected with avian influenza. The girl had received immediate
Tamiflu treatment and was placed on a respirator. Her condition is
now critical.

A new human death from avian influenza was reported by the Egyptian
Ministry of Health, bringing to 38 the number of fatalities from
avian influenza A/(H5N1) virus infection since the beginning of the
outbreak in Egypt in 2006.

The victim was an 11-year-old girl resident in Luxor Governorate,
which is located 660 km south of Cairo. Abderrahmane Chahine, a
Ministry of Health spokesman, reported that the girl had developed
acute pneumonia.

The same source added that a total of 115 people, distributed
throughout the country, had contracted avian A/(H5N1) virus infection
during 2010, 11 of whom had died. Egypt, with 38 fatal human cases
identified since March 2006, remains the country most affected by
avian influenza outside of Asia.

The poultry industry in Egypt, which employs a million people
directly or indirectly, has suffered serious economic loses,
estimated at 3 million dollars [USD?].

Avian influenza is a contagious disease caused by a virus that
normally infects birds, and less commonly pigs. Avian influenza
A/(H5N1) virus is highly species-specific but has, on rare occasions,
infected humans.

116th human case of avian influenza A/(H5N1) influenza

Dr Abdel Rahman Shahin, spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Health,
announced the discovery of a new case of bird flu [avian influenza
A/(H5N1) virus infection]. The patient is a 56-year-old woman resident
in the eastern governorate of Sharqia. She becomes the 116th human
case since the onset of the outbreak [in Egypt in 2006].

Dr Shaheen stated that the woman had been admitted to a hospital in
Sharqia governorate suffering from high fever, cough, and with
difficulty in breathing. She had been exposed to domestic poultry
suspected of being infected with the bird flu virus. She had been
administered the drug Tamiflu on suspicion of avian influenza virus
infection and throat swabs had been sent for laboratory examination.

The official spokesman stated that the patient has developed
pneumonia, but remains in a stable condition and has been transferred
to a hospital in Cairo.

[Confirmation of this 116th human case of avian A/(H5N1) influenza
virus infection by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is awaited.
(The WHO table of Confirmed Human Cases of Avian Influenza A(H5N1) at
<http://www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_in ... index.html> has not been updated since 9 Dec
2010).

It is unclear from this translation whether the diagnosis in fact has
been laboratory confirmed. In total, 38 of the 116 cases identified in
Egypt have been fatal since the beginning of the outbreak in March 2006.

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced two new cases of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza.

A 28 year-old woman from Damanhour district of El Beheira governorate developed symptoms on 12 December. She was admitted to hospital on the 14th and subsequently discharged on the 22nd in good and stable condition. She has a history of exposure in a market where live animals are sold.

An 11 year-old girl from Esna district of Luxor governorate developed symptoms on 18 December and was admitted in the hospital the following day. She experienced severe respiratory symptoms requiring mechanical ventilation and died on 23 December. No information is available regarding poultry exposure. Investigations into the source of infection are underway.

Laboratory tests have confirmed H5N1 virus and both patients were treated with antiviral medications. Of the 115 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 38 have been fatal.

Abdel Rahman Shahin, the official spokesman of the [Egyptian]

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has announced four new cases of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza.

A 56 year-old female from Sharkia governorate. She developed symptoms on 22 December, was hospitalized on 23 December and received treatment with oseltamivir. She was discharged from the hospital on 30 December 2010 in a stable condition. No information is available regarding poultry exposure. Investigations into the source of infection are underway.

A 25 year-old female from Qena Governorate. She developed symptoms on 19 December 2010 and was admitted in the hospital on 27 December 2010 and died on 29 December 2010. Case investigation revealed that she had contact with poultry.

A 27 year-old male from Ismailia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 23 December 2010 and was admitted to hospital on 28 December 2010. He is still under treatment in the hospital. No information is available regarding poultry exposure. Investigations into the source of infection are underway.

A 40 year-old male from Dakahlia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 25 December 2010 and was admitted to hospital on 30 December 2010. He died on 2nd January 2011. He had contact with poultry. Laboratory tests have confirmed the H5N1 virus.

Of the 119 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 40 have been fatal.

A 10-year-old male from Giza Governorate, developed symptoms on 5 January and was hospitalized on 8 January. He is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to poultry. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network (GISN).

Of the 120 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 40 have been fatal.

Alexandria and is suffering from high fever, cough, runny, and
febrile convulsion. The child had been exposed to domestic birds
(chickens and ducks) that appeared to be infected with bird flu. The
child was given Tamiflu and his health condition is now stable.

(chickens) and was suspected to be suffering from bird flu. The
patient has received Tamiflu treatment and is in stable condition.
