A 2-year-old Egyptian boy has tested positive for bird flu, bringing
the number of people who have contracted the disease in the most
populous Arab country to 26, the Health Ministry said on Monday [19 Mar 2007].

The Ministry said the boy was admitted to hospital on Friday [16 Mar
2007] in Aswan, the same southern city where a 10-year-old girl
tested positive for the disease last week (see part[1] above). She
has since recovered.

"He's in good condition now because Tamiflu was given within 24 hours
after the onset of symptoms," John Jabbour, a World Health
Organisation official in Cairo, told Reuters.

Jabbour said there was no apparent link between the 2 Aswan cases,
and the Health Ministry said in a statement that members of the boy's
family were under observation.

Since the virus first surfaced in Egyptian poultry in early 2006, 13
Egyptians have died from the disease. Most of those who fell ill were
reported to have had contact with sick or dead household birds,
primarily in northern Egypt. Egypt has the largest number of
confirmed human cases outside of Asia, and with 8 confirmed cases
this year, is among the hardest-hit countries worldwide for 2007. The
U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) chief veterinary
officer Joseph Domenech said on Thursday [15 Mar 2007] that Egypt was
one of 3 countries that still do not have sufficient bird flu
controls in place.

[A significant feature of these apparently unrelated cases is that
the 2 (case 25 und case 26) patients are residents of Aswan in Lower Egypt, whereas the
majority of Egyptian cases have occurred in Upper Egypt. Although
Egypt now has the largest number of confirmed human cases outside of
Asia, mortality at 50 percent is much lower than the 77.8 percent
experienced in Indonesia and closer to the overall global 60.1 per
cent, possibly as a result of prompt resort to Tamiflu treatment.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory and by the US Naval Medical Research Unit No.3 (NAMRU-3). The 2-year-old boy from Aswan Governorate developed symptoms on 15 March. He was admitted to hospital the following day where he remains in a stable condition. Investigations indicate a history of contact with backyard poultry. No epidemiological link has been found between this case and that of the 10-year-old girl from the same area that was announced on 19 March 2007. Of the 26 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 13 have been fatal.

In Ägypten sind erneut drei Menschen an der Vogelgrippe erkrankt. Wie die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) und die Regierung in Kairo am Dienstag mitteilten, infizierten sich zwei Kinder im Alter von fünf und sechs Jahren sowie eine 46-jährige Frau mit dem Virus. Sie steckten sich nach Behördenangaben bei Geflügel an. Damit sind in Ägypten seit Februar vergangenen Jahres 30 Menschen an Vogelgrippe erkrankt. 13 von ihnen starben.

Vogelgrippe in Ägypten

KAIRO – In Ägypten haben sich drei Kinder mit der potenziell tödlichen Form der Vogelgrippe infiziert. Seit ihrem ersten Auftreten in dem Land im Februar 2006 wurde die Krankheit damit bei 33 Menschen diagnostiziert.

13 von ihnen starben. Bei den drei neuen Fällen handelt es sich um einen Vierjährigen aus der südlichen Provinz Kena, eine Vierjährige aus der nördlich von Kairo gelegenen Provinz Kaljubija und einen Siebenjährigen aus der südägyptischen Stadt Suhak.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population has announced two new human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The cases have been confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory and by the US Naval Medical Research Unit No.3 (NAMRU-3). The first case, a 2-year-old female from Menia Governorate, developed symptoms on 3 April and was admitted to hospital the following day. She is currently in a stable condition. Initial investigations into the source of her infection indicate recent contact with backyard poultry. The second case is a 15-year-old female from Cairo Governorate. She developed symptoms on 30 March and was admitted to hospital on 5 April where she remains in a critical condition. Of the 34 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 13 have been fatal.

Egypt: girl infected with bird flu according to MOH and WHO

CAIRO: A 10 year old girl from southern Egypt has been infected with the
deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, and is in "very critical" condition, a World
Health Organization (WHO) official said on Friday [8 Jun 20007]. "There is
a new human case just reported by the Ministry of Health (MOH). She is a 10
year old female. She has a history of contact with backyard birds," said
John Jabbour, an official with WHO in Cairo.

This fresh infection brought the number of human cases of avian influenza
[H5N1] in Egypt to 35, of whom 14 have died. Egypt's state news agency MENA
reported that the girl, from the southern town of Qena, was in hospital on
a respirator.

The disease first hit Egypt in 2006 and did extensive damage to the poultry
industry and the economy as a whole. Egypt has the highest number of
confirmed human bird flu cases outside Asia. Most of those who fell ill
were reported to have had contact with sick or dead household birds,
primarily in northern Egypt. But the government still finds it hard to
enforce restrictions on the movement and sale of live poultry.

Egypt: 10 year old girl dies of bird flu virus infection

A 10 year old Egyptian girl who contracted the H5N1 bird flu virus died on
Saturday [9 Jun 2007], bringing the number of fatalities from the disease
in the most populous Arab country to 15, the health ministry said. The girl
is reported to have fallen ill on 1 Jun 2007 after coming into contact with
infected household birds but did not enter hospital until roughly a week
later, delaying potentially life-saving treatment.

Her case followed a nearly 2 month warm weather lull in human bird flu
cases in Egypt, where 35 people [including this 10 year old girl - Mod.CP]
are known to have contracted the virus since it was 1st detected in
Egyptian poultry in early 2006.

The Egyptian health ministry said in a statement that the girl, from the
southern town of Qena, had been admitted to hospital on Thursday [7 Jun
2007] with a high fever and a pulmonary infection, and was put on an
artificial respirator. "She died at dawn on Saturday and is considered the
15th death from bird flu in Egypt," the statement said.

Bird flu did extensive damage to the country's poultry industry and the
economy as a whole after its arrival in Egypt, which has more confirmed
human bird flu cases than any other country outside of Asia. Most of those
who have fallen ill in Egypt were reported to have had contact with sick or
dead household birds, primarily in northern Egypt where the weather is
typically cooler than in the south. But in a sign of a change in how the
disease may be occurring in Egypt, all but 2 of the past 11 human cases
have occurred in central or southern parts of the country.

Bird flu experts in Egypt have said they would typically expect fewer human
cases of the disease during Egypt's sweltering summer months, and in 2006
there was a summertime lull in human cases between May and October. Experts
fear that the bird flu virus might mutate or combine with the highly
contagious seasonal influenza virus and spark a deadly pandemic which could
circle the globe and kill millions.

Around 5 million households in Egypt depend on poultry as a main source of
food and income and the government has said this makes it unlikely the
disease can be eradicated. The government still finds it hard to enforce
restrictions on the movement and sale of live poultry.

success in preventing death by prompt administration of antivirals. The
delay in hospitalisation may have contributed to the unfortunate death of
this young girl.

In Ägypten ist am Samstag ein an Vogelgrippe erkranktes Mädchen gestorben. Die Zehnjährige war am Donnerstag positiv auf den Virusstamm H5N1 getestet worden, wie der Gouverneur der Provinz Kena, Magdi Ajjub, sagte. Das Kind aus dem Dorf Donfik im Süden des Landes hatte den Angaben zufolge in seinem Elternhaus Kontakt zu Geflügel. Seit dem ersten Auftreten der Krankheit in Ägypten im Februar vergangenen Jahres erkrankten dort 35 Menschen an Vogelgrippe, 15 von ihnen starben.

Egypt has reported another human case of avian flu on Tue 12 Jun
2007. A girl from Qena, south of Cairo, has been reported transferred
to a hospital after she was diagnosed with the deadly bird flu, Abdel
Rahman Shahin, spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Health, said in
a press release.

The girl, 4, is the 36th person infected with the H5N1 virus in
Egypt. 16 of those infected have died from the disease.

At the same hospital, another man is being treated for symptoms that
may be due to the virus. The hospital in Qena is currently running
tests to determine whether another infection has been discovered.

Egypt is the worst hit nation outside East Asia, where the deadly
disease was 1st discovered in humans. That the country is on a major
migratory route for birds is the main reason that Egypt has been hit
with the disease.

Many of the victims have come into contact with infected dead birds,
which occurs mostly in the near vicinity of their homes.

[The WHO reports 36 cases of human H5N1 avian influenza virus
infections, with 15 deaths (one less than the 16 reported above). It
is true that Egypt is located on a major bird migration route, but
one must not automatically assume that migratory birds, and not
movement of domestic poultry, are responsible for the introduction of
the virus into the country. Establishing indemnity payment for culled
poultry is not a simple matter: if the payments are less than current
market value, outbreaks are likely to go unreported and especially
valuable birds hidden or moved to avoid their sacrifice. Education is
critical to insure proper disposal of culled or other dead infected
birds to avoid exposure of other poultry populations or of humans to
the virus.

Young boy tests positive for bird flu

A 4-year-old Egyptian boy has tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu
virus, becoming the 37th human case in the Arab country, the official
Middle East News Agency [MENA] reported on Saturday [23 Jun 2007]. It
quoted a health ministry statement identifying the boy as an
inhabitant of the Upper Egyptian province of Qena.

He was admitted to hospital in Qena on Thursday [21 Jun 2007]
suffering high fever after being exposed to birds suspected of having
bird flu, MENA quoted the ministry as saying. He was taken to a
hospital in the capital Cairo and is in a stable condition. A total
of 15 of Egypt's bird flu cases have proven fatal.

This patient is the 3rd human bird flu case from Qena over the past
month after a lull of nearly 2 months. Egyptian officials had said
they expected the virus to lie low during the hot summer, following
the pattern it set last year after the initial outbreak in February 2006.

A 25-year-old woman from northern Egypt has been diagnosed as having
contracted the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, the Health Ministry
announced on Sunday [22 Jul 2007]. The woman from the coastal town of
Damietta went to her local hospital on Saturday [21 Jul 2007]
complaining of high temperature, Ministry spokesman, Abdel Rahman
Shaheen, told the official MENA news agency. She was diagnosed as
having contracted bird flu and was sent to Cairo where she is being
treated with Tamiflu, he said. The woman had been working with
domestic poultry, which had exhibited symptoms of the disease. Others
in her family are now being tested.

She became the 38th case of the virus [disease] reported in Egypt
since the 1st outbreak was announced in February 2006. Women and
children have borne the brunt of the virus [disease] due to their
role in taking care of domestic fowl.

A 10-year-old girl died of bird flu earlier in June [2007], bringing
to 15 the number of fatalities in Egypt. Egypt's geographical
location on major bird migration routes and the widespread practice
of keeping domestic fowl near living quarters have led to it being
the hardest-hit country outside of Asia. The government says it is
conducting a vigorous campaign to combat the spread of the virus
through vaccinations and raising awareness, but cases continue to appear.

In June [2007], the World Health Organisation said the fight against
bird flu has improved around the world, but the situation remains
critical in Egypt and Indonesia where the risk of the H5N1 virus
mutating into a major human threat remains high. Egypt and Indonesia
remain high-risk [areas] because of the permanent contact that many
people in both nations have with domesticated birds.

[This the 1st report of a new human case of H5N1 avian influenza in
Egypt since 25 Jun 2007. The number of fatalities remains 15,
reflecting the success of the Egyptian medical authorities in
providing prompt access to treatment of patients with Tamiflu.

She developed symptoms on 20 July and was hospitalized the following day. She is receiving treatment and is in a stable condition. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate exposure to sick and dead poultry in the week prior to onset of symptoms. Of the 38 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 15 have been fatal.
