The Ministry of Health of Egypt has notified WHO of a new case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.

The case is a 27 year-old male from Qena governorate, Deshna district. He developed symptoms on 5 June 2011, was hospitalized and was put on oseltamivir treatment on 13 June. He died on 14 June 2011. Investigations into the source of infection indicate that the case had exposure to poultry suspected to have avian influenza. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian sub-national laboratory for Influenza in Aswan and the Central Public Health Laboratories in Cairo, a National Influenza Centre of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

Of the 150 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 52 have been fatal.

In addition, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization
(FAO) today [2 Aug 2011] confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian
influenza in Egypt. The FAO report [available at
<http://empres-i.fao.org/empres-i/2/obd? ... eak=164064] said the
case was in Al Beheira governorate in the northern part of the country
but supplied no details of the age and sex of the person and how
transmission likely occurred. A positive test was confirmed on 27 Jul
2011.

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has notified WHO of one case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus. The case is a 6 years old female from Demnhoor district, Behira governorate. She developed symptoms on 1 2 July, and was hospitalized. She completed the course of oseltamivir, recovered and was discharged on 30 July . Investigations into the source of infection indicate that the case had exposure to poultry suspected to have avian influenza. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

Of the 151 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 52 have been fatal.

The Ministry of Health of Egypt has notified WHO of one case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.

The case is a 1 year-old male from Mahala district, Gharbia governorate. He developed symptoms on 17 September and was hospitalized on 21 September. He completed the course of oseltamivir, recovered and was discharged from the hospital on 25 September. Investigations into the source of infection revealed that the case had contact with poultry raised in the neighbourhood. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

Of the 152 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 52 have been fatal.

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of one case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.

The case is a 31 year-old female from Meet Salseel district, Dakahlia governorate. She developed symptoms on 10 November 2011 and was hospitalized on 16 November 2011. She is in critical condition and is provided with ventilation support. Investigations into the source of infection revealed that the case had exposure to sick and dead poultry in her backyard. The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network on 21 November 2011.

Of the 153 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 52 have been fatal.

15.12.2011 - WHO

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of two cases of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.‬‪

The two cases are a mother and her young child from Dakahlia Governorate. Both developed symptoms on 26 November 2011.‬‪The mother was admitted to a Hospital on 1 December 2011 and received oseltamivir on admission. The child was hospitalised on 2 December 2011 and received oseltamivir on admission. The mother was 24 weeks pregnant. She died on 3 December 2011. The child is in stable condition.‬‪ Investigations into the source of infection indicate that both cases had exposure to sick and dead backyard poultry (chicken and turkeys).‬‪ The case was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Centre of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network, on 3 December 2011.‬‪

Of the 155 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 53 have been fatal.‬‪

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of a case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.‪

The case is a 29-year-old male from Dakahlia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 8 December 2011 and was admitted to hospital on 15 December 2011, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He was in critical condition and died on 19 December 2011. The case was confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Centre of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network on 18 December 2011. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to backyard poultry.

Of the 156 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 54 have been fatal.

Senator died of bird flu

BULAWAYO: The woman mainstream MDC-T [Movement for Democratic Change
– Tsvangirai] senator for Mabutweni has died of bird flu, a family
spokesperson told journalists at her house in Mpopoma high density
suburb [of Bulawayo] on Wednesday [28 Dec 2011]. A family spokesperson
Samuel Gombami who is brother to the senator's husband said that
postmortem results released on Tuesday in Harare shows that she died
of bird flu.

“We were finally given postmortem results and they show that she was
taken away by bird flu. We still can’t believe this as a family, we
are in still shock,” said a relative. Bird flu also known as avian
influenza is a contagious disease of birds, caused by avian influenza
(A) virus. The outbreak of avian influenza of most concern began in
poultry in South Korea in mid-December 2003. The Mabutweni senator was
buried at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo. Prime Minister Morgan
Tsvangirai and dozens of MPs and senators attended the funeral.The
48-year-old senator died after complaining of disorientation and
dizziness while travelling home to Bulawayo from a funeral in Gokwe on
Boxing Day. She was rushed to a hospital in Kadoma where she died.

the initial diagnosis of avian influenza is awaited. The description
of the victim's condition on admission to hospital is not sufficiently
specific to confirm the dignosis of influenza virus infection on
symptoms alone. Laboratory confirmation that the death of the patient
was the result of avian A/(H5N1) influenza virus infection is
necessary.

Likewise information on the prevalence of avian influenza virus in
wild birds or poultry in the Bulawayo area is lacking, as is
iformation on the extent of the victim's possible contact with
diseased birds. Zimbabwe is not among the 15 countries that have
reported human cases of avian A (H5N1) influenza virus infection in
the past.

Health and Child Welfare Minister denies bird flu death

Mystery surrounds the cause of death of MDC-T [Movement for a
Democratic Change - Tsvangirai] legislator. News reports said that the
senator had died of avian influenza or bird flu, but health expects
deny there any cases of the disease in the country. Health and Child
Welfare Minister Henry Madzorera said the government had not raised
any alerts of an outbreak of the disease as they had not received
reports of a possible epidemic. “The Epidemics and Disease Control
centre has not informed me about any outbreak, but they are closed and
we can only know that after the holidays,” he said. Madzorera said
he could not comment further as he had not received any news of an
outbreak.

Officials from the Health Ministry also revealed that there were no
known cases of the virus in Zimbabwe or in the region. They said it
was highly unlikely that there could have been an outbreak in the
country. The only recently recorded cases, the officials said, were
reported in Hong Kong and a spread to Zimbabwe at this stage was
highly improbable.

But the family of the late senator insist that post-mortem results had
indicated that the deceased senator had been afflicted with the deadly
avian virus. The Standard could not have access to the post-mortem
report. To add to the mystery, a Kadoma doctor reportedly declined to
carry out a postmortem and instead referred the family to a hospital
in Harare. “We were told that she had a swelling in her stomach
because there was water in her lungs, but this did not make sense to
us,” an informed source said. The source said before her death, the
senator was down with influenza, she however developed an unnamed
infection in her chest.

In the past Zimbabwe’s health systems have been reported to be
incapable of handling epidemics such as bird and swine flu. In 2010 it
was reported that some children in Tsholotsho were affected by swine
flu. However, results on whether it was actually swine flu were
inconclusive.

[As inferred in the previous post, there is no evidence, other than an
inconclusive autopsy report, to establish the cause of death of the
Zimbabwean senator. While avian A/(H5N1) virus infection cannot be
excluded, in the absence of any laboratory investigation there is
nothng to support this diagnosis, particularly as the disease has not
been reported in Zimbabwean poultry. - Mod.CP.

5 January 2012 - The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of a case of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.‪

The case is a 42 year-old male from Menofia Governorate. He developed symptoms on 16 December 2011 and was admitted to hospital on 21 December 2011, where he received oseltamivir treatment. He was in critical condition and died on 22 December 2011. The case was confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Centre of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network, on 24 December 2011. Investigations into the source of infection indicated that the case had exposure to sick and dead backyard poultry.

Of the 157 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 55 have been fatal.

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of two cases of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.‪

The first case is a 2 year-old female from Cairo Governorate. She visited Helwan Fever Hospital as an outpatient on 30 October 2011 with symptoms of influenza-like-illness (ILI). The case was confirmed by RT-PCR at the Central Public Health Laboratory through periodic testing of samples collected from ILI outpatients from sentinel ILI surveillance sites. The epidemiological team investigated the case after confirmation of the laboratory test. Retrospective investigation through data collected from her family identified a positive history of exposure to backyard poultry. Samples from the case have been sent to the US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) for further sequencing.

The second case is a 31 year-old male from Fayium governorate. He developed symptoms on 1 January 2012, received oseltamivir on 14 January 2012 and is still hospitalised under the critical care unit. The case was confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratory, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

Epidemiological investigations into both the cases indicated that they had exposure to backyard poultry.

Of the 159 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 55 have been fatal.

Under the radar, bird flu arrives back in Egypt

With all eyes on Egypt's new parliament in January, 13 cases of the H5N1, or bird flu, [avian A/(H5N1) influenza virus infection] were reported in Egypt, highlighting that the deadly virus was making a return to this North African country. According to the health ministry in Egypt, Mansoura -- a Delta city north of Cairo -- at least 13 suspected cases of suspected bird flu infection are being treated at the Mansoura Chest Hospital as a precaution. Two of those cases were confirmed as being bird flu and tests on the remaining patients are ongoing. All those suspected to be infected have been quarantined and removed from the general hospital population as a safeguard, medical officials told Bikyamasr.com.

The resulting infections has caused both the health ministry and the agricultural ministry to begin preparations for a nationwide campaign to fight the virus and inform Egyptians on how to prevent the disease from spreading. "These measures are just a small part of a more general plan to curb the spread of the virus in our country," Saber Abdel Aziz, a senior official from the state-run General Organization for Veterinary Services, according to IRIN. "We will also offer incentives to poultry growers to look for signs of illness in their animals, report sick ones, and practice bio-security."

It is unclear what exactly that campaign will look like, but with reports continuing to circulate in Egypt about possible outbreaks, and 2 deaths, a 2-year-old girl in Cairo and a 31-year-old man in Fayoum, efforts are being made to battle against the virus in Egypt.

H5N1 has infected 159 and killed 55 people in Egypt since 2006, according to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics. The ministry says that in 2011, 40 people contracted bird flu, and that number is expected to rise, officials say, as the economic situation continues to worsen in the country and rural areas are keeping their animals closer to home.

The case is a 45 year-old female from Menofia governorate. She developed symptoms on 10 February 2012, received oseltamivir treatment on 17 February 2012 and is still recovering. The case was laboratory confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratories; a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network on 18 February 2012. Epidemiological investigation into the source of infection indicate that the case had exposure to backyard poultry.

Of the 160 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 55 have been fatal.

The case is a one year-old female from Gharbeia governorate. She developed symptoms on 14 February 2012 and was admitted to a hospital on 15 February 2012, where she received oseltamivir treatment upon admission. She is in good medical condition. Epidemiological investigation into the source of infection is ongoing. Preliminary investigations indicate presence of backyard poultry in her area of residence. The case was confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratories; a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

Of the 161 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 55 have been fatal.

28.02.2012 - WHO

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has notified WHO of two new cases of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus.

The first case is a thirty-two year old male from Behira governorate, in the Abo Elmatameer District. He developed symptoms on 16 February 2012 and was admitted to hospital on 21 February 2012 where he received oseltamivir treatment upon admission. He died on 28 February 2012.

The second case was a thirty seven year-old female from Kafr Elshihk governorate in the Kelleen District. She developed symptoms on 18 February 2012 and was admitted to hospital on 23 February 2012 where she received oseltamivir treatment upon admission. She died on 26 February 2012.

Preliminary investigations into both cases with regard to the source of infection indicate close contact with sick or deceased backyard poultry at the cases' respective residences. Both cases were confirmed by the Central Public Health Laboratories, a National Influenza Center of the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network.

Of the 163 cases confirmed to date in Egypt 57 have been fatal.
