The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case is a 19-year-old male from Kafr El-Dawar District, Behera governorate. He developed symptoms on 30 March was hospitalized on 31 March and died on 4 April. The case was confirmed as being infected with A(H5N1) by the Central Public Health Laboratories and by Cairo-based US Naval Medical Research Unit 3 (NAMRU-3) . Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a history of contact with sick and dead poultry. Of the 48 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 21 have been fatal.

Ein zweijähriger Junge sei in dieser Woche mit Symptomen des H5N1-Virus in ein Krankenhaus eingeliefert worden, erklärte die WHO am Donnerstag in Genf. Zwei Labore hätten den Verdacht bestätigt. Seit 2006 sind in Ägypten 22 Menschen an Vogelgrippe gestorben.

He developed symptoms on 13 April and was hospitalized on 14 April and is currently in hospital. Investigations into the source of his infection indicate a history of contact with sick and dead poultry. Of the 50 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 22 have been fatal.

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case is a 16-year-old female from Assuit Governorate, Upper Egypt whose symptoms began on 8 December 2008. She was initially hospitalized at the district hospital on 11 December and then transferred to the Assuit University Hospital on 13 December where she died on 15 December. Infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus was diagnosed by PCR at the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory and subsequently confirmed by the US Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) laboratories on 15 December 2008. Investigations into the source of her infection indicate a recent history of contact with sick and dead poultry.

Of the 51 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 23 have been fatal.

Egyptian girl has bird flu, 2nd case this season

An Egyptian girl of 21 months has contracted bird flu [avian A/H5N1
influenza virus] and is in hospital in a stable condition, a health
ministry official said on Monday [12 Jan 2009].

She is the 52nd human case of bird flu in Egypt and the 2nd of this winter
[2008/2009] season. The girl showed the 1st symptoms on Friday [9 Jan 2009]
and was admitted to a specialist hospital on Saturday [10 Jan 2009], said
assistant health minister Nasr el-Sayed, quoted by the state news agency MENA.

The other Egyptian to contract the deadly virus this year [2008], a woman
near the southern town of Assiut, died on 15 Dec 2008. From the 52 human
cases in Egypt over almost 3 years, 23 have died, but the number of cases
seems to be diminishing.

The girl, from the village of Kerdasa on the western edge of Cairo [in the
6th October Governorate], had been in contact with infected birds and
showed the usual 1st symptoms -- a high temperature, vomiting, and
diarrhea, Sayed said. She is receiving the antiviral drug Tamiflu
[oseltamivir], which has proven effective against bird flu if treatment
starts early.

Since the 1st case in 2003 there have been 248 human deaths globally from
the H5N1 strain of bird flu and at least 394 confirmed cases of infection.
Egypt has had more cases than any country outside Asia.

A 21 month old girl has bird flu in Egypt

Dr Al-Nasr, assistant secretary of the health ministry for population
affairs, preventive medicine, and primary care stated that a 21 month old
girl [from 6th October governorate] became ill on Fri 10 Jan 2009 and was
admitted to hospital on Saturday. Her symptoms included high temperature,
vomiting, and diarrhea. Dr Nasr said that the patient received Tamiflu
[oseltamivir] treatment once she was diagnosed as a probable case of bird
flu. She remains in a stable condition.

Adly Hussein, governor of [neighbouring Al Qalyubiyah governorate] has
decided to stop the operation of 71 poultry farms in the province for a
period of 6 months and their owners are to be fined due to lack of
implementation of decisions to prevent the smuggling of poultry and to
allow the inspection teams to follow up preventive measures to control bird
flu.

New human case of avian influenza - case number 52

The Ministry of Health and Population (MOH), Egypt, reported a new
confirmed human case of avian influenza on 12 Jan 2009. The case is a 21
month old girl from 6th October Governorate, Kerdasa District. The symptoms
started on 9 Jan 2009. The patient was admitted to Imbaba Fever Hospital on
[10 Jan 2009] with fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid respiration.
The case was immediately suspected as avian influenza and given medical
treatment, Tamiflu [oseltamivir], 40 hours after the onset of symptoms.
Investigations showed very close contact with sick and dead poultry since
one week. Currently, the patient is in a good health condition.

This brings up the total number of confirmed human cases of avian influenza
in Egypt to 52 with 23 deaths.

A spokesman for Egypt's Health Ministry says a 2-year-old child is
Egypt's 53rd case of bird flu since the H5N1 virus appeared in the
North African country in 2006. The child, from the northern province
of Menoufiya, was admitted to the hospital Friday [23 Jan 2009] with
elevated temperature and sore throat and was immediately treated with
the anti-flu drug Tamiflu, says spokesman Dr. Abdel Rahman Shahine.
The boy is in stable condition, he told the state news agency Sunday
[25 Jan 2009].

Like most of Egypt's victims of the disease, the child was in regular
contact with domestic fowl.

Egypt has had the highest number of human cases after Indonesia and
Viet Nam. On 16 Dec 2008, a teenager was the 23rd death in the
country from bird flu since March 2006.

Egypt confirms 54th human case of bird flu

On Wed 4 Feb 2009 the Egyptian Health Ministry confirmed that a
2-year-old baby has been infected with bird flu virus, which brings
the number of human cases of bird flu to 54 in the populous country.

The baby from the Suez governorate, some 120 km (75 mi) east of
Cairo, was admitted to hospital with a high temperature, the state
MENA news agency quoted Health Ministry spokesman, [Abdul Rahman
Shaheen], as saying. The baby contracted the deadly virus after being
in contact with infected birds, said [Shaheen].

This is the 3rd case of human bird flu in Egypt in 2009. On 25 Jan
2009, a 2-year-old baby from the Delta governorate of [Al-Minufiyah],
some 65 km (40 mi) north of Cairo, was hit by the deadly disease. On
12 Jan 2009, a 21-month-old baby girl from Kerdasa, 6th of October
governorate, was infected with the virus.

Egypt reported its 1st H5N1 virus in dead poultry in February 2006
and the 1st human case in March of the same year.

Two-year-old struck with bird flu

Health authorities [in Cairo] announced Wednesday [4 Feb 2009] that a
new case of bird flu has been discovered in the province of Suez
involving a male child, thus bringing the number of people struck by
this disease in the country to 54 since its appearance in Egypt in
February 2006.

The afflicted child is 2 years old, said Dr [Abdul Rahman Shaheen],
spokesman for the ministry of Health, adding that the flu symptoms
began to appear on the child last Monday [2 Feb 2009], following
which he was admitted to the hospital for observation. He had come in
contact with dead birds while playing which resulted in his running
up high fever and severe coughing and other symptoms normally
associated with the bird flu. This took place last Friday [30 Jan 2009].

The disease had struck dead 22 people in Egypt since its appearance,
and the authorities [in Cairo] fear its resurgence mainly because
poultry shops, chicken-coop keepers at home, and bird collectors
mishandle dead birds, which exposes these people to the deadly flu.

An Egyptian boy has contracted the bird flu virus, the state-run news
agency quoted the Health Ministry as saying on Sunday [8 Feb 2009],
the 2nd such case in the last week and the 55th case since the virus
reached Egypt in 2006. The 18-month-old boy from the province of
Minia in central Egypt 1st showed symptoms on Friday [6 Feb 2009]
after coming into contact with dead birds and was admitted to
hospital on Saturday. He was administered the antiviral drug Tamiflu
and is now in a stable condition, the health ministry said.

On Wednesday [4 Feb 2009], the ministry reported a 2-year-old boy in
the Suez province was in hospital after contracting the virus.

Egypt is one of the only countries affected by bird flu that does not
offer compensation for farmers when poultry is destroyed, which many
experts say is the best way to ensure rapid detection of new
outbreaks. Some 5 million Egyptian households depend on poultry as a
main source of food and income.

Since 2003, the virus has infected 404 people in 15 countries and
killed 254 of them. It has killed or forced the destruction of more
than 300 million birds. Egypt has had the most cases outside of Asia.

A baby from southern [central?] Egypt has contracted the bird flu
virus, which brings the number of human cases to 55 in the country,
the Health Ministry announced Sunday [8 Feb 2009]. The
one-and-a-half-year-old boy showed symptoms on Friday [6 Feb 2009]
after he had contact with infected birds, the ministry said in a statement.

The boy from the Upper Egyptian governorate of Minia, some 220 km
south of Cairo, is now in a stable condition after being treated with
the antiviral drug Tamiflu, according to the statement.

Egypt is the most affected country by the deadly avian influenza
outside Asia. It reported its 1st H5N1 virus in dead poultry in
February 2006 and the 1st human case in March of the same year. The
death toll of the human cases of bird flu in the populous country is 23.

The World Health Organization (WTO) has said that as of 5 Feb 2009,
some 405 people in 15 countries have contracted the virus, and 254 of
them died of the disease.

in critical condition, the state-run news agency quoted the Health

country.

The Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted Assistant Health Minister
Nasr el-Sayyed as saying the boy, Youssef Abdel-Azim from the
province of el-Fayoum in central Egypt, showed symptoms on Wednesday
after coming into contact with dead birds.

He was administered the antiviral drug Tamiflu and remains in
critical condition on an artificial ventilator at a hospital in
Cairo, Sayyed said, according to the agency.

Egypt is one of the only countries affected by bird flu that does not
offer compensation for farmers when poultry is destroyed, which many
experts say is the best way to ensure rapid detection of new
outbreaks.

Some 5 million Egyptian households depend on poultry as a main source
of food and income.

Since 2003, the H5N1 avian influenza virus has infected 408 people in
15 countries and killed 254 of them. It has killed or forced the
culling of more than 300 million birds as it spread to 61 countries
in Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

While H5N1 rarely infects people, experts fear it could mutate into a
form that people could easily pass to one another, sparking a
pandemic that could kill tens of millions and topple the global
economy.

The new case is a two-year old male from Yousef el seddik district of Fayoum Governorate whose symptoms began on 25 February. He was hospitalized and treated at the Manshiet Elbakry general hospital on 28 February and is currently in a critical condition. Infection with H5N1 avian influenza was confirmed by the Egyptian Central Public Health Laboratory on 1 March. Investigations into the source of infection indicate a history of close contact with dead and sick poultry prior to becoming ill. H5N1 human infection reaches Cairo
----------------------------------
The 1st 2 human infection cases in Cairo were announced yesterday
[Tue 4 Mar 2009].

A 32-year-old woman and her 55-year-old mother were infected by H5N1
[avian influenza virus] from the domestic poultry they used to raise.
They live in the Sahal area in Cairo. They were transferred to
hospital and were found to be H5N1 positive. Hopefully they will be
cured.
