TOURISM: NUMBER OF TOURISTS IN LEBANON UP 29% FROM 2007

BEIRUT - The number of tourists who chose to visit Lebanon in the first eight months of 2008 rose by 29% compared to the same period of last year. The Beirut office of Italian Foreign Trade Institute (ICE) said that the number of tourists who visited Lebanon in the period January-August reached 885,729 people, up 29.2% compared to the same period of last year. The number of tourists in August 2008 alone was 195,549, up 33.6% compared to August 2007. The Arab tourists are 40.6% of all, followed by the visitors from Europe with 26.4%, from America with 13.7% and from Asia with 13.4%.

TOURISM: LEBANON; +28.3% IN FIRST 9 MONTHS ON ANNUAL BASIS

The number of tourists arriving in Lebanon reached 983,585 units in the first nine months of the year, an increase of 28.3% compared to the same period for the previous year, despite the flow of tourists for September, which showed a downturn of 50% compared to the peak in August 2008, reported the ICE (Italian Foreign Trade Institute) in Beirut. Arab tourists represent 36% of the total and Europeans 28%. Tourist buying patterns were concentrated on "high fashion" products (66%) and 79% of total expenditures were spent in the city of Beirut.

TOURISM: LEBANON, 2008 A RECORD YEAR

According to figures issued by the ministry concerned, 2008 was a record year for tourist numbers. The number of tourists arriving reached 1.33 million, up 31 pct on those for 2007 and up 4 pct on 2004, making it the best year since the civil war. It would be necessary to hark back to 1974 to find a similar number of tourists. Most of the tourists, says Italy's trade commission in Beirut, come from Arab lands, followed by European visitors.

BEIRUT - An "alternative" multimedia guide to the Beirut of today and of yesterday beyond the old stereotypes of the city which sees "perennial wars", or of the "Paris of the Middle East', or as a symbol of "inexpressible chaos" and of "nightly transgressions": this is the ambitious objective that has been attained by a grog of young Lebanese, all aware of the urgent need to present foreigners and Beirut city-dwellers themselves with a multi-level map of the capital city. 'The Alternative Guide of Beirut' is the fruit of the labours of Studio Beirut, an association set up shortly after the war between Israel and Shiite movement Hezbollah in the summer of 2006. It comprises a handful of Lebanese architects who were then joined by anthropologists and sociologists, all in their early thirties. The multi-medial guide is to be published in October both in paper format and as a DVD thanks to funding from Amsterdam's 'Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development' (PCF). This first edition is to appear in English ahead of next year's Arab version. BEIRUT - Lebanon is preparing to welcome at least 5 million tourists for the upcoming summer season, about a million more than last year, reported the Tourism Minister, Elie Maruni, quoted today in the local press. Maruni specified that most of the visitors would be Lebanese citizens that reside abroad. BEIRUT - The summer holiday season in Lebanon is all sold out...not only in hotels, but also in cosmetic surgery clinics. Indeed, thousands of foreigners - and it is increasingly foreigners - from Europe, the Americas and the Gulf are set to spend their summer holidays having a few 're-touches' done. "We have the best specialists in the world, who have come back to Lebanon after time abroad in Europe and the United States", boasts Dr.Imad Kaddura, the famous Beirut surgeon who considers cosmetic surgery a real art. "Unfortunately there aren't that many Picassos around", he said: "that's why you see all those ski-jump noses around". Instabile Stabilität im Libanon

Beirut platzt aus allen Nähten – nur drei Jahre nach dem Krieg gegen Israel 2006 kommen die Touristen wieder in Scharen in den Libanon. Es herrscht zwar relative Stabilität, aber die Spannungen mit Israel sind geblieben.

Auf den Terrassen des Sporting Beach Club, direkt auf den Klippen am Meer, stehen die weißen Plastikliegestühle dicht an dicht. Marwan Abu Nussar, der Manager, grinst zufrieden: "Viele unserer alten Kunden, Libanesen die heute im Ausland leben, besuchen uns. Auch mehr Ausländer kommen wieder nach Beirut." Von den täglichen, verbalen Drohungen, die die Israelis und die schiitische Hisbollah gegeneinander ausstoßen, will sich der 46-jährige nicht verdrießen lassen. TOURISM: LEBANON, NEW RECORD FOR SECTOR, +39% IN 2009

BEIRUT - The tourism sector in Lebanon has achieved another important milestone; in 2009 the number of tourists that visited the country totalled 1,851,081, with a 38.9% increase on 2008 and an 82% increase on 2007. The Italian Trade Commission (ICE) office in Beirut pointed out that this is a record for the country; only in 1974 did the country report similar numbers, with 1.4 million tourists.
