Tourism loss after terror attacks threatens financial crisis for MauritaniaMauritania is facing a financial crisis due to the significant drop in tourism and withdrawal of investors following several terrorist attacks, Mauritanian Tourism Minister Ba Madine said on Tuesday (March 25th). "We were expecting 15,000 tourists this year, but we will find it difficult to reach even 6,000," the minister said, adding that the government "is trying to figure out what to do about this crisis." Four French tourists were killed in December, an attack in early January against an army outpost in El Ghallawiya killed three soldiers and another attack on the Israeli embassy in Nouakchott injured three people. The cancellation of the Dakar Rally alone led to losses of more than $4.7m. In order to reassure tourists that such attacks would not recur, the government has stepped up security measures by increasing the number of policemen and setting up new road blocks on major roads.
