An Egyptian and a Sudanese company signed an agreement on Tuesday to build a key section of the Cape-to-Cairo highway, an Egyptian official said.
The road has been a dream since the late 19th century, when British officials planned a road to connect their colonies in Africa.
Under the agreement, a 400km stretch of highway will be built between Aswan in Egypt and Dongola in Sudan at a cost of $500-million, Osama Saleh, chairperson of the General Authority for Investment, told reporters.
This is the last section to be built between Khartoum and Cairo, although major gaps remain unfinished in East Africa.
"The project aims to connect Egypt's Alexandria and Cape Town in South Africa," Saleh said.
Egypt's state Holding Company for Building and Construction and Sudan's privately owned Zawaya Group for Development and Investment signed the memorandum of understanding. - Reuters

The commissioner said the Egyptian government has asphalted the road up to borders Sudan and that Sudan has to construct 27 Kilometers from borders up to Wadi Halfa town.

Dongola, April 20 (SUNA)- An agreement for implementing Halfa - Gastal road was signed Tuesday between the government of the Northern State, on behalf of the federal government, and MAM Company for Roads and Bridges at the length of 29.6 kilometers
The road is due to be constructed at the cost of 15 million dollars and within a period of seven months
In a statement after the signing of the contract, the Minister of Physical Planning in the Northern State, Ahmed Gasim, told SUNA that establishment of Halfa - Gastal road as part of the development process in the Northern State. He stressed that the government of the Northern State will go ahead in implementation of development and infrastructural projects

Aus dem arabischen Originatext kann man entnehmen, dass geplant ist, eine Fährverbindung zwischen Abu Simbel und dem Ort "Qastal" einzurichten, d.h. man könnte die Asphaltstraße von Asswan aus bis Abu Simbel benutzen, dort übersetzen und dann auf dem Ostufer nach Wadi Halfa weiterfahren. Die äg. Seite wird bis zu 4 Fähren für diese Passage zur Verfügung stellen. Was mit der traditionellen Fährverbindung Asswan-Halfa passiert, ist leider nicht mit der notwendigen Klarheit diesem Text zu entnehmen.
dann wissen wir jetzt, was uns erwartet. Leider wird die Fähre nicht völlig verschwinden. Die Straße auf ägyptischer Seite kann man schon in Google Maps sehen. Wie weit die sudanesische Seite ist, bleibt unklar. Offenbar wurde die durch den Präsidenten eingeweiht und wird nun in 7 Monaten gebaut ...

Ich weiß immer nicht so genau, ob ich mich nun freuen soll, dass mit der Straße ein Stück Unsicherheit entfällt - oder ob ich traurig sein soll , dass mit der Fähre irgendwann dann auch ein (nahezu letztes) Stück ursprünglichen Reisens in Afrika verschwinden würde.

1.) Wann genau wird die Straße eröffnet?
2.) Wo genau verläuft sie?
3.) Wird die Fähre, die offenbar die Straße auf dem Ostufer mit der schon älteren Straße von Assuan nach Abu Simbel verbinden soll, besser sein als die alte??
4.) Dürfen Touristen diese Verbindung überhaupt nutzen?
In einem anderen Bericht ist von drei neuen Straßen zwischen Ägypten und Sudan die Rede, von denen die entlang des Roten Meeres durch das Halaib-Dreieck sicher auch von einigem Interesse wäre:
