East- Mauretania: Permit from police?

We are planning tot travel Timbouctou-Nema- Oualata-Tichit-Tidjikdja-Atar by foot (supported with camels). Does anyone know or we need to aks for permission of the authorities of Mauretania to travel in this area. (for Mali we need to (we think so) but we can easily do at Timbouctou, because we start there.

So do we need permission, and if so, can we get it in Nema?

And does anyone know a thing about leaving Mali, not at the official border post: entry in Mauretania should not be a big problem. But is it a problem to leave Mali without a leaving stamp?

En als je Mauretenie binnen komt, dan heb je geen stempel op je Visa - of je bent zonder Visa in het land. Wat doe je dan bij een controle ???

Dus beter de officiele weg gaan !!!

I wouldn't recommend to leave a country not on the official check point, especially when you have to travel back for any reasons. What happens, if you are controlled by a patrol?
The travelers should stick to the rules.

genau das hab ich ihm per PN auch probiert deutlich zu machen.
Roeland ist übrigens zu Fuß unterwegs und will keinen Umweg in Kauf nehmen. Kannst Du Dir einen Fußgänger im Grenzgebiet spazierend vorstellen ? ....
Er weiß es jetzt - die Entscheidung liegt bei ihm!

Ja, er ist mit dem und zu Fuß unterwegs. Zum Glück gibt es, soweit ich weiß, zwischen Mali und Mauretanien keine Minen, die zum Problem werden könnten.

We dont want to be arrested... that takes too much time and troubles so we go for the long walk and cross at the official border, I was only wondering if... now I know more, thanks. Yes indeed we are planning for walking and i do understand you would not suggest that in the border area, I understand. Do you have some information about the safety in this area for me. I didnot find much. Thanks

Hello Roelant,

do you travel with a guide? This route is not very frequently used so you should use a guide or at least GPS. Since you travel in the south east, it should be no problem from the security point of view. Depending on whether you take a guide or not, I would report to the local police your route, just in case. The north/north east is known for a couple of incidents with bandits. A permission for your area is currently not needed.
Since there was recently an outbreak of yellow fever in Mali with some cases of dead I would take a vaccination. The authorities try to get this with mass vaccination under control.

We will travel with a guide (and also bring a gps) But we wanted to know more ourselves and not completely depending on the guide.

Hello Roeland,

You can cross the border at Fassala Nere. The procedure is quite quick. They may ask you for your certification of vaccination for the reason, I explained above. There are a lot of wells along your route. However, depending on the season they can be dry. The best is to ask your guide or other locals.
I’m just curious: How do you arrive in Mauretania, by plane? Do you have experience with camels? I’m interested in this kind of travelling. Hope, we here from you, when you are back.

Hello Alex,

Actually we come from the other side: we fly to Mali, and start in Timbuctu en go then in the direction of Nema and go on. We are still preparing and will go hopefully next year, I will let you know about our experiences. We have to learn alot about camel-handling too But we have still some time to do.

I am aware of the border post of Fassla Nere: but it is not often used: and I thought it was a single borderpost only of the mauritanian authorithies, and no Mali authorities (first one, our in our case last one in Lere, sofar I know)
I am curiuous too: did you travel in this area?
