TURKEY: SMOKING BAN INCLUDES ALSO "NARGILES", OFFICIAL

ANKARA - The smoking ban, which went partially into effect on 19 May 2008 and is due to be expanded to include restaurants, coffeehouses, cafeterias and bars on 19 July, also includes the Turkish traditional water pipe, daily Today's Zaman reported. National Cigarette and Health Committee (SSUK) Chairwoman, Elif Dagli, said in a press release that some nargile cafes are trying market nargiles as if they were not a tobacco product in order to be excluded from the scope of the approaching ban. "The smoking ban covers all substances made of tobacco. So the ban to go into effect on 19 July also includes closed areas where the nargile is smoked", she said.

TURKEY: SMOKING BAN VIOLATES HUMAN RIGHTS, BAR OWNERS CLAIM

ANKARA - A group of cafe owners has applied to the parliamentary Human Rights Commission, demanding that a recently introduced smoking ban, prohibiting smoking in all indoor areas, including cafes, bars and restaurants, be lifted because violates human rights, daily Today's Zaman reports. The commission sent the application, which underlines that the smoking ban in Europe is far more "flexible" than in Turkey, to the relevant ministries.
