ARCHAEOLOGY: ALGERIA; ROMAN CITY RUINS FOUND IN SKIKDA

ALGIERS - The head of the heritage preservation in Algeria, Ghania Chekrit, has announced that a number of archaeological ruins of the Roman city Tabsus have been found in Zerdaza, south of Skikda, in eastern Algeria. They were found by chance at a construction site. "Following an initial inspection," said Chekrit, "we can say that it is the Roman city Tabsus, which lay on the banks of the River Safsaf as reported by the historian El Idrissi in his writings." Among the finds are a number of marble columns and torches, a large tank for olive oil production and a very large stone. The Skikda region is one of the regions in Algeria with the highest concentration of archaeological finds from the Roman age. Since 1995, said Chekrit, "numerous ruins have been found, including a skeleton from Roman times, a cemetery from the Muslim age, a Roman villa and, in May 2008 a cemetery from the Roman age."
