
By modeling a desert where the wind blows in two directions, researchers from CNRS and Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7 are managed for the first time to observe and highlight the dynamics of formation and evolution of two very large dune types: dunes transverse and longitudinal dunes.
They demonstrated that the latter and the barchans - the crescent-shaped dunes formed in a wind system in one direction - are more stable over time. These results should help to better understand the future of the dunes and deserts on Earth, but also to infer critical information on wind patterns on Titan or Mars, for example.
