Sudan’s Ministry of Water Resources and Electricity on Monday said that Saudi Arabia will cultivate one million feddans in Upper Atbara and Setait project in East Sudan, which will be inaugurated at the end of the year. On Monday, the National Assembly unanimously approved a legal framework agreement that gives Saudi Arabia the right to cultivate lands in Upper Atbara and Setait project for 99 years. Last April, Sudan said it will inaugurate a Saudi project to cultivate one million feddans in July. The feddan is a unit of area equivalent to 1.038 acres (0.42 ha). Upper Atbara and Setait Project, which is funded by Gulf financial institutions, aims to generate 150 Megawatts of power and provides irrigation water sufficient to cultivate one million feddans [...] While deliberating on the agreement, some Members of Parliament (MPs) objected to the length of time for the project. They called to reduce it to 20-25 years and suggested to renegotiate the contract at the end of its term. Und wurde in Äthiopien fündig.

One person was killed in confrontations over the sale of a land to a foreign investor between police and residents of Um Kati area, some 70 kilometres north of Khartoum [...] It is noteworthy that the government decided to seize 97,000 feddans of land which residents of Um Kati claim its ownership. In Kenia zum Beispiel geht es um Anbauflächen ausländischer Investoren, es geht um Tee, Kaffee, Viehzucht und neuerdings auch um Pflanzen zur Treibstoffgewinnung. Kenia steht für viele Länder Afrikas: "Mehr als 40 Prozent aller Land-Transaktionen in den letzten 20 Jahren sind in Afrika gewesen",“ beschreibt Markus Wolter, Agrarexperte bei Misereor, das Problem. "Afrika hat besonders viele schwache Staaten und schwache Boden-Märkte, schwache Bodenkatasterämter. Da gibt es wenig Regularien, und deswegen können dort Investoren sehr gut zugreifen." Zwölf Millionen Hektar sind in den vergangenen Jahren in Afrika in die Hände von Finanzinvestoren, Spekulanten oder Großfarmen gefallen, so eine Bestandsaufnahme der Plattform "LandMatrix", die auch vom deutschen Wirtschaftsministerium unterstützt wird. Probleme schaffen dabei natürlich nicht nur die Begehrlichkeiten aus dem Ausland, sondern auch Korruption und Gier der heimischen Eliten.
