Dans un contact avec l’ANI, un porte-parole d’Al-Qaïda au Maghreb islamique a affirmé que cette organisation a exécuté l’otage français Philipe Verdon, qu’elle detenait parmi d’autres otages français dans le nord du Mali. Selon ce porte-parole, qui s’est présenté au nom de « ghairawani » AQMI a exécuté Philipe Verdon enlevé en même temps que son compatriote à Hombri, dans le nord du Mali, en novembre 2011, qualifiant cet otage d’ « agent secret de la France ».

Dimanche, Al-Qaida au Maghreb islamique (Aqmi) a de nouveau menacé de tuer les otages français qu'elle retient et a appelé leurs familles à "faire pression" sur le gouvernement français pour qu'il cesse son intervention armée au Mali contre les groupes djihadistes. Dans un message publié par l'Agence Nouakchott Information (ANI), un site mauritanien, et adressé aux familles et au "peuple français", Aqmi affirme que les otages qu'elle retient sont "bien vivants, hormis l'espion Philippe Verdon", un otage français dont un porte-parole d'Aqmi a annoncé le 19 mars sur le même média l'assassinat, en représailles à la guerre française au Mali.

L’otage Philippe Verdon serait mort à la suite d’une maladie qu’il avait contractée avant son enlèvement. Il n’aurait donc pas été exécuté par Aqmi, comme l’avait pourtant affirmé un porte-parole du groupe terroriste, mi-mars, présentant ce geste comme une mesure de représailles après l’intervention française au Mali. C’est la conclusion que Jean-Pierre Verdon, le père de l’otage, a tirée de son entretien avec François Hollande, hier à l’Elysée.
The body of a French hostage who was announced killed by his Al-Qaeda captors in March has "very likely" been found in Mali, the foreign ministry said in Paris Sunday. A French hostage found dead in Mali this month after being held by Islamist militants was killed by a shot to the head, the Paris prosecutor's office says. A post mortem examination conducted on Philippe Verdon's body revealed the circumstances of his death. The prosecutor said it showed that Mr Verdon "was assassinated".

French special forces have killed a militant Islamist in Mali who was said to have been freed in exchange for the release of Frenchman Serge Lazarevic. Ali Ag Wadossene, a senior member of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), was killed in northern Kidal city, a French army statement said. Two other militants were captured in the operation, it added.
