A presidential advisor to South Sudan has been forced to leave Juba after the disclosure of a letter urging 75 officials to return some four billion dollars they are accused of stealing, a news report has unveiled. According to a report published on Monday by McClatchy Newspapers, an Ethiopian-American advisor to President Salva Kiir was forced to flee Juba fearing for his safety following the release of a letter sent to influential officials and individuals close to the government [...] However the letter, released one month later on 4 June, was contested by many officials who denied the accusation as some others openly disputed the $4 billion figure. The UN told McClatchy Newspapers it "is not familiar" with how the $4 billion figure was calculated [...] Dagne, and Rice, were together in a close circle of people who worked over the past years to mobilise American officials and Congress members to support the South Sudanese cause. The group narrated in a long story published by Reuters last July how they worked to achieve South Sudan’s independence. The Ethiopian American researcher and activist told US newspapers, when leaving Juba, that he was very frustrated by the extent of corruption, tribal wars and lack of development in the new nation.
South Sudanese government has planned to “temporarily” close down many of its embassies abroad due to lack of money to continue to operate them as the country’s economy continues to deteriorate, a source has disclosed. The world’s youngest East African nation, which got its independence in July 2011 from the Sudan, has about 24 embassies and missions in Africa, Middle East, Europe, Asia and America. However, a source from within the South Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation disclosed to Sudan Tribune that there is a plan to close down several embassies in different continents. “We plan to close down at least 10 embassies from around the world. It is an austerity measure due to lack of money to run the embassies,” an official source who preferred anonymity told Sudan Tribune on Monday. He said the challenges faced by the South Sudan’s embassies include lack of money to rent embassy premises, no salary monies for staff and even for operations.

South Sudan has foreign currency reserves likely to last for only a month, a Central Bank official said amid warnings of a possible economy collapse. “The [foreign] reserves we have may cover only imports of only five weeks [from now],” John Dor Majok, the deputy Central Bank governor told Radio Miraya Thursday. “After that [five weeks], there will not be any goods in the market," he added, but said the goods could be available in the country, yet the prices could be extremely high. This is the first time Central Bank has public declared the depth of the economic crisis triggered by war in 2013 that led to reduction in daily oil output, coupled with decline in global oil prices. South Sudan relies on oil for 98% of government revenues. According to Majok, the current economic situation might not improve anytime soon “The only thing that will salvage this situation is to get more dollars, work to make sure that oil production goes back to pre-crisis levels,” he said.

South Sudan has announced not to celebrate its Independence Day this year due to economic crisis which has prevented preparations as there is no money to do so. The 5-year old world’s youngest nation used to commemorate the day every year on 9 July when it gained its independence from the neighbouring Sudan. This will be the first time the nation will fail to celebrate its independence due to shortage of money.

The South Sudanese government has imposed restrictions on the movement of its nationals, denying them access to their families in neigbouring nations in violation of their constitutional and basic rights to freedom of movement. It is still unclear as to who issued the directive and for what purpose. The director of Juba international airport, Kur Kuol confirmed receiving directives from the authorities that no government official should be allowed out of the country without permission. Even ordinary citizens are said to be affected as they have been turned away at the airport and denied possession of their passports. A South Sudanese national studying in Uganda could not return for exams as Friday, the day he intended to travel, witnessed deadly clashes the presidential palace said his passport was confiscated.

South Sudanese took to the street to protest against the planned deployment of additional foreign troops to back the fighting and protection capacity of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), which has a 12,000-strong force. The protest, organized by the country’s ruling party (SPLM) secretariat, saw hundreds march through Juba streets to UNMISS base next to Juba airport. [...] The presidential spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny said any foreign troop coming to the country without government’s approval would not be accepted, claiming it would be seen as an “invasion force”. “The approval of extra foreign troops by the African Union, in conjunction with IGAD [Intergovernmental Authority on Development] to be deployed in South Sudan is exceedingly impinging on our sovereignty - and therefore is not acceptable comes what”, Ateny said in a statement. “Any foreign troops coming to South Sudan without government approval will not be welcomed, but seen as an invading force”, he added.

South Sudan's former vice president and prominent opposition leader Riek Machar has told Al Jazeera that his replacement by President Salva Kiir is "illegal". In an exclusive phone interview on Wednesday, Machar said: "I'm still the first vice president of the republic of South Sudan. The appointment made yesterday by President Salva Kiir is illegal. "It has no basis because the peace agreement does not give him the powers to appoint a first vice president under the current circumstances."

United Nations headquarters in New York has revealed that its peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo airlifted the former First Vice President, Riek Machar, from the South Sudan-DRC border and transported him into the interior part of Congo on Wednesday. The UN said the Congolese government has been taking care of the opposition leader who is “exhausted” after five weeks in the bushes around the capital, Juba, and walking towards the DRC border.
