Cattle raiders loot 15 villages in Lakes state

RUMBEK — Armed tribesmen from Central Equatoria have looted some 1500 head of cattle in raids on 15 villages in Lakes state, a local SPLM official said today. The attacks by a clan of Mundari tribe called Chuklei hit 15 villages in Awerial county which consists of 7 payam and 23 bomas. SPLM county secretary, Dut Malualcahoc, told reporters that the number of Internally Displaced Persons in Awerial has increased as result of the continuous raids as well as poor rainfall this year. Malualcahoc urged the state government to deploy more SPLA troops in the affected area. "SPLM is busy now by a from house to house campaign for 2010 general election and with this threat of raiders, our campaign will be ill like census result which did not meet the county interest," Malualcahoc said ... mehr

Officials swept through Juba city at dawn telling residents to stay in their homes and seizing illegal weapons. Many in the south remain heavily armed after 22-year war with the north. It came as US envoy Scott Gration arrived in Juba for talks aimed at paving the way for the south to hold a referendum on seceding from the north. The operation to disarm the south began in February, with the UN billing it as the biggest such operation in history. In a dawn assault, the attackers – said to be heavily armed – overran local youths and organized forces trying to defend the area of Duk-Padiet, a Payam headquarters. After controlling Duk-Padiet for less then one hour, SPLA and other security forces in the area repulsed the gunmen. Speaking to Sudan Tribune on Sunday, Duk youth leader David Malual Wuor confirmed the attack but declined to talk about casualties, given its sensitivity. JUBA, Sudan — South Sudan is to provide community militia groups with weapons to fight the brutal Ugandan
Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group, the governor of the hardest hit region said on Monday. Self-defence groups known as "Arrow Boys" -- armed with basic weapons such as machetes -- already guard the rural communities affected by the LRA fighters, since the mainstream armed forces are stretched too thin across the vast jungle region. TAMBURA – Members of the nomadic Ambororo tribe are reported to have killed one and injured two in a clash with local vigil ante group, known as the Arrow Boys in Bangala, which is about 25 miles on Tambura–Nagero road. In an interview with Sudan Tribune, the county commissioner of Tambura County Charles Ngbamisi Babiro said, “the Ambororo who were on their way out of the territory of the state, have made a U-turn back to the state near border with Central African Republic.” He disclosed that according to Arrow Boys, or home guards, the man who was shot Matthew Marikpe, “was shot in a cross fire in an ambush laid by the Ambororo, as they refused to leave Western Equatoria.” ... mehr
