In the past year, attackers have also thrown acid into the faces of religious leaders, both Christian and Muslim. Others have been shot ... The series of attacks has sparked fears of a tourist exodus from Zanzibar, which is famed for its pristine white-sand beaches and is heavily reliant on tourism. Another apparent homemade bomb was hurled into a church on Sunday ... Some have blamed the hardline Islamic group Uamsho, Swahili for "The Awakening", a minority group but believed to be growing in influence ... While the group denies involvement in any of the attacks, they have widely succeeded in funnelling cultural and political tensions into support for radical Islamism. As Zanzibar celebrates the 50th anniversary of its union with mainland Tanzania this year, some opposition political parties also want to break ties and return to independence.

A bomb ripped through the Arusha Night Park bar Sunday night while it was packed with patrons watching a football match, injuring at least 15 people, Tanzania's The Citizen reported Tuesday (April 15th). Investigations indicate that the explosion was caused by a homemade bomb, Arusha Regional Commissioner Magesa Mulongo said. Eleven people were admitted to hospital, most of them with shrapnel wounds to their legs, medical officer in charge at Mount Meru Regional Hospital Jonas Mlay said. The club, which is opposite Soweto grounds along the Moshi-Namanga road, remained closed Monday as detectives sifted through the debris for clues.

One person was killed and several others were wounded in a bomb attack near a mosque on Tanzania's Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar on Friday, police said. Police said the bomb went off in the Daranjani commercial district of Stone Town, the UNESCO-listed historical centre of the semi-autonomous Tanzanian archipelago, at around 8:15 pm (1715 GMT).

Eight people have been injured in a bomb blast at a restaurant in the Tanzanian town of Arusha, officials have said. Police said an improvised explosive device was thrown through the window of the Indian restaurant frequented by tourists and wealthy locals. The northern town is a gateway for tourists visiting Mount Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti national park. Last week a bomb was also thrown into the house of a Muslim cleric.
