TOURISM: TUNISIA LEAST EXPENSIVE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRY

TUNIS - Tunisia is the country on the southern shores of the Mediterranean where a tourist's average expenditure is only 354 dollars, as against 970 dollars on average in Turkey, 950 in Morocco and 830 in Egypt. Experts in the industry report that the gap is due to the kind of visitors which the country attracts, particularly those who enjoy seaside holidays, and is mostly made up of the European middle classes. Another negative factor is the indebtedness of Tunisian hoteliers, who accept tour operator offers simply to "fill their tills." In any case, the outlook for Tunisian tourism can be considered positive, due to the opportunities it offers for thalassotherapy, golf and tourism linked to medical treatment. And early results confirm this optimism, since overnight stays in 2008 cost an average of 96 dinars (around 50 euro), as against the 89 dinars recorded in the previous year.

TUNISIA: TOURISM, POSITIVE DATA IN FIRST FIVE MONTHS

TUNIS - During the first five months of this year 2,284 million tourists have visited Tunisia - marking a 1.3% increase with respect to the corresponding period of 2008. Estimated earnings are up as well, with a +3 per cent when compared to the same period the previous year. The information was referred by the country's Ministry of Tourism.

TOURISM: TUNISIA SEES MORE LIBYANS, FEWER ITALIANS/GERMANS

TUNIS - Libyan tourism to Tunisia increased by 17% in the first five months of 2009. Visits by European citizens, on the other hand, have not proven as promising: particularly negative data is seen as concerns Italy (-10.5%) and Germany (-7%). Algerian tourists, too, are in decline, marking a 3% decrease in visits to the neighbouring country. Overall data for the period, with respect to the same period the previous year, is +1.3% with a total of 2,240,000 visits.

TUNIS - Protected areas in Tunisia cover a surface equal to 3.4% of the country. This percentage will increase to 7% with the 19 new zones being added to the protected areas. TUNISIA: FOREIGN INVESTORS INTERESTED IN MEDICAL TOURISM

TUNIS - Foreign investors are increasingly interested in the development of medical tourism in Tunisia. According to African Manager, the Japanese group Tokyshuka Medical Corporation wants to invest USD 55 million in a private hospital in the country. The United Arab Emirates group El Maabar even wants to build a complete city dedicated to medical tourism in the Ariana region near Tunis. According to recent figures, this kind of tourism brings more than 120,000 patients to Tunisia per year, 18% from European countries and the rest from Africa. Most health tourists are women, drawn in to have cosmetic surgery done by good specialists at prices that are considerably below those asked by their European colleagues ... mehr

HEALTH: TUNISIA, EXCELLENT RESULTS FOR THALASSOTHERAPY SECTOR

TUNIS - Tunisia is the second-largest centre in the world for thalassotherapy, after France. Last year, says press agency Tap, 152,000 people, mainly from France, Switzerland and Germany, took advantage of the treatments offered by fifty specialist centres in Tunisia. The result is also due to the many promotional campaigns directed at the European market. In the meantime, "a study on the development of Tunisian balneotherapy and thalassotherapy products, planned for 2020, has been scheduled by the Tunisian National Office for Tourism", says Tap.

TOURISM: TOZEUR SAW 251.000 TOURISTS IN OCTOBER

TUNIS - Tozeur, on the edge of the Tunisian Sahara, has seen encouraging signs in its tourism sector. According to the latest data, tourists numbered 251.000, for a total of 398,500 overnight stays. Six new hotels are at the disposal of tourists between Tozeur and the nearby Nefta, making for a current capacity of 6.850 beds. And in this period, the high season for such Sub-Saharan zones, confidence has been placed in the Oasis Festival scheduled for December, with new flights directly connecting the Tozeur-Nefta airport with Milan and Rome.
