Tuareg rebels in Niger freed on Monday two dozen soldiers and a district official held hostage for several months. An AFP correspondent witnessed the arrival of the hostages at an airport in the Nigerien capital Niamey aboard a flight chartered by Libya, which helped broker their release. The hostages, kidnapped between June last year and January 2008, were released to mark one year since the Movement of Niger People for Justice (MNJ) launched its rebellion. Handed initially over to Libyan government representatives, the hostages were later received by Nigerien government officials in the capital. Active in northern Niger since February 2007 in the barren but uranium-rich north, the MNJ says peace will not return to the region without better integration of Tuaregs into the army, paramilitary corps and the local mining sector.

Gunmen attack uranium lorry in Niger

A Dabaga, une bourgade située à une trentaine de Km de la ville d’Agadez, deux civils dont un commerçant de la place, nommé Aboubacar, ont été sommairement exécutés, le mercredi 26 mars dernier, aux environs de 16h. Le domicile de M. Ahmad Emini, maire de la commune rurale de Dabaga et trois autres maisons appartenant à des particuliers ont été incendiés. Tous les objets s’y trouvant ont été pillés par des militaires. L’axe qui mène à cette localité est actuellement occupé par les Forces de défense et de sécurité rendant impossibles les déplacements de la population dans cette partie de l’Aïr. Les derniers événements survenus dans l’Aïr traduisent clairement les objectifs du pouvoir de Niamey. Son comportement à notre égard en dit long sur l’épineuse question de notre citoyenneté. En effet, comment expliquer qu’au moindre mouvement ou acte de révolte, même très circonscrit, la population civile est martyrisée, arrêtée et malmenée ? Comment encourager, féliciter et récompenser des soldats de la république pour avoir tué et massacré des populations sans défenses, des honnêtes citoyens dont les impôts servent à payer armes et soldes des militaires ? Comment, après cette expérience douloureuse, garder confiance en cet Etat qui nous dénie de tous nos droits ? Cet état qui missionne son armée pour envahir nos villages et campements, tuer, torturer et humilier nos populations, brûler leurs demeures et leurs marchés, anéantir leurs biens et leurs troupeaux ... mehr
